History by Design offers research services to complement its design and editorial work. We are willing to do background research for education and heritage publications, but we are also keen to research wider issues that have an impact on the heritage, archives and museums sectors.

Research work is undertaken by Ben Locker who holds a degree in Mediaeval History from St Andrews University and has experience in researching publications, evaluation reports and social science projects.

Our most recent client has been Heritage Link, which commissioned Ben Locker to undertake a major research project - How We Do It - into the work of the voluntary heritage sector. The conclusions, drawn from information gathered online, by email and in interviews, form part of Heritage Link's contribution to Heritage Counts 2006.

We take stringent care to agree research methods with clients and emphasise the importance of evaluation at all stages of a project.

We are also able to keep costs down by using online, database-driven surveys to gather data.

The research was both timely and important - what the huge number of active voluntary bodies founded since 1865 have contributed to heritage objectives, or how they do it, has never before been quantified. The research results have formed a contribution to English Heritage's Heritage Counts report for 2006.
