Background

History by Design is a design, research and editorial consultancy founded in April 2006 by Barry Lowenhoff and Ben Locker. We have worked together on a variety projects since 2002, including Education Extra's Reading Journey and the Heritage Open Days Teacher's Pack and Organiser's Handbook.

We have always enjoyed working together and particularly appreciate the chance to breathe fresh life into tired formats, as well as to devise completely new ones.

There's a little bit about us below and, if you're interested in learning more, please get in touch

Ben Locker

Ben Locker is responsible for our copywriting, research and editorial services, as well as building websites to Barry's designs. He read Mediaeval History at St Andrews University and then qualified as a secondary school History teacher at the University of East Anglia. After 18 months as Assistant Editor of Family History Monthly, Ben spent a number of years working in education-related posts in the voluntary sector, including positions with Education Extra and Volunteer Reading Help. Most recently he managed the Civic Trust's national Heritage Open Days education programme, a curriculum-linked project designed to bring children, families and community members together to learn from our heritage and history.

Ben's main interests are reading, history, writing and photography. His first book, the satirical Swinesend: Britain's Greatest Public School, of which he is co-author, was published in April 2007 by Atlantic Books.

Ben's personal website can be found here.
